Spark + Buzz was thrilled to help Keymar Winery translate their brand into a beautifully bespoke visual identity and naming system. The owners were adamant about their wine being approachable and accessible–not stuffy and exclusionary. This allowed us to really lean into a beautiful blend of old and new, while being both playful and elegant.

Knowing that Francis Scott Key was born near Keymar, Maryland on a parcel of land called Terra Rubra, we baked elements of this into the Keymar Winery brand without screaming Americana. We also intentionally created a nomenclature system for the various wine varietals.

For example, Keymar’s Cabernet Franc is aptly dubbed Terra Rubra, translating to red earth, alluding to the red clay soil on the property and acknowledging Francis Scott Key’s birthplace. Terra Umbra is Keymar’s Syrah, meaning shadowed earth, giving a nod to Syrah’s inky hue and depth, as well as the shadows cast on the vineyard hillsides. We also purposefully combined a font that is reminiscent of the founding fathers’ signatures, with a textured felt paper for the labels, complemented by a bright pop of color around the label edges to blend that old and new vibe.

What did we create for Keymar Winery?

  • Brand Strategy
  • Visual Brand Identity (logo, wine labels, social media templates)
  • Website integrated with Commerce 7 (included design + website copy)
  • Tasting Room Menu
  • Business Cards
  • Spark Board (Spark + Buzz’s hybrid of a mood board and style sheet)
